As a UNC guy, and a huge baseball fan I will follow what happens with some of UNC's signees. Namely, Brian Goodwin(high school teammate of my son)and Donovon Tate(UNC Football signee). While reading some posts on a UNC Football message board, I saw that a poster had theorized that the Padres(drafted Tate) would likely not pay Tate a huge amount so as to have more money to pay their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks. Is that a plausible scenario, or is the poster engaged in wishful thinking hoping Tate will be on campus? Surely all MLB teams are generally prepared to pay all their draftees, correct?

Hey SoN1, one thing to consider with Tate is that since he is a multi sports guy they can spread out his bonus over 5 years. It might make it a little easier to drop the bigger dollars since it won't all have to be paid in the first year.

Unfortunately the Padres have a history of "draft first, figure things out later," and it has bit them on the hind parts a few times in recent years. Internet speculation is just that -- speculation -- but this particular post may be informed by the Padres' history of bollixing their first rounders.
