FBM gave me some good info, but alas, as the song goes, "I am just a poor boy..."

Any "deals" on places to stay close to Pepperdine? I've booked a hotel on Redondo Beach, but according to Mapquest, it's about 45 minutes away. How about eats?

Need same info for Cal Poly area also.

Thanks in advance.
Frank

Not sure in the Malibu area. Although Redondo is a bit far from Pepperdine. I vacation the SLO area all the time. We taking a weekend trip to the SLO area in a couple weeks. Send me e-mail and I can provide the info. SLO is beautiful area right along the central coast. We have a player from our program committed to SLO for the 2007 seasoon.

FrankF - Here are some SLO recommendations from when my daughter was in school there a couple of years ago:
The Apple Farm Inn is nice but pricey - almost as nice, but less expensive is the Apple Farm Trellis Court, located right next door. There is a Holiday Inn Express right next to campus and also a Best Western that I have not stayed in but looks okay. We usually stayed at the Embassy Suites there, mainly so we could only get one room and put a bunch of people in there (and the free wine at happy hour was a bonus, too 14).

If you are going to go to Pepperdine, I think the closest bet would be to stay in Oxnard or Ventura. Oxnard is about a 30 min. drive down the coast to Pepperdine. There are some hi end hotel/motels here, including Embassy Suites on the ocean and the Marriot (unless the name has changed) which is the spring training site for the Dallas Cowboys. Besides those, there are at least another dozen or so 3, 4 and 5 ****** in the area.

Frank...

Headed to Pepperdine this weekend...have some ideas but pretty well winging the trip will let you know what we find...

Depending upon your needs..If you have a budget...we used to stay at the Motel 6 in Atascadero just north of Cal Poly...very reasonable...decent area...small town but all the amenities...easy freeway acess and maybe 10 minutes to Cow Poly...

Thanks all. Awaiting your info observer44.

After further checking. Redondo Beach is too far from the three places Dartmouth plays. Found a bit more $ place in Calabasas but much closer to Pepperdine and Northridge. UCSB will still be a drive, but not as bad.

On to Cal Poly. walk

Now if the CA teams wouldn't body-builder and give us late starting guys a chance. boxing

Thanks again.

Frank F,

Wow, quite a trip from New England. Your biggest challenge will be dealing with traffic flows between LAX and Santa Barbara when you arrive, and Monday getting out to Northridge. If you arrive early enough on the 15th, drive on up to Santa Barbara...it's worth the trip to be able to look around a little before you go the ballfield. I stayed (without the wife) at a Motel 6 on State Street just a few miles from campus. Very reasonable for Santa Barbara. Malibu is a pain inthe neck because it is so isolated. A mountain range seperates you from Calibasus and there are limited roads across. Kanaan Dune is the main one and give it one accident or a little rain and ugh! I'd try to find a beach motel along the Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Santa Monica. The closer to Santa Monica you get, the more expensive things become and once again the traffic can be horrible. Also, just south of Oxnard is Point Hueneme, about 20-25 minutes from Pepperdine. Make your trip to Northridge just for the game...it's a light industrial/ residential area. Not a scenic wonderland! Then right after the Northridge game hit the road to Poly. I think Atascadero or Pismo Beacha are great suggestions. Again, without the wife and on a limited budget, Motel 6 is a fine room. Good luck and hopefully the weather stays nice. Cool

Frank,

Back from SLO, and Pepperdine....OK here goes...

Cal Poly SLO...tons of places in town as I already knew, Ms. 44 needed a hair dryer so we couldn't do the inexpensive Motel 6's on the south side of SLO but there are two there under $50. Maybe 5 minutes from the school. We stayed at a very nice Days Inn, on 2050 Garfield, closer to the school, and downtown for $90. Clean, nice staff, nice area, C Breakfast.

Malibu...Tricky...there is little on the coast but this is what you do.....on the south side of Pepperdine is the Malibu Canyon Road. Wind perhaps 15 miles east up the canyon and you end up on HWY 101 in the Woodland Hills area, lots of options there. Some of the college teams stay at the Woodland Hills Hilton. $70 will get you a nice room, great staff and service, Fitness Club access, tons of resturaunts and shopping nearby. Pepperdine is perhaps 15 mostly scenic minutes away. This is a MUCH better option than Redondo or such.

Hope this helps...

Cool44,

Thanks for the update. I have a room at the same Days Inn for Cal Poly. Booked a room at a Hilton in Calabasas, but it's more than Woodland Hills. Will look into it.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

FrankF..

Great minds think alike. For a Days Inn it's a flagship!

The Hilton is a bit downtown, but safe and clean, still lots of trees around. I understand it is where many of the teams stay so I figured it made some sense....

You'll love watching games at Cal Poly and Pepperdine...Great venues...

Glad to be of help.

Cool44,

I checked the Woodland Hills Hilton and the cheapest I found was $179 a night not including the $12 a day parking fee. Eek

Maybe they used spyware angry and thought since I have a kid at Dartmouth that I have money! noidea

NOT!!! Mad

Thanks anyway. I'll just have to stay with the Calabasas choice.

Another suggestion for the Calabasas area is the Good Nite Inn. I have never stayed there but our boys stayed there when they went up to Pepperdine for a Holiday Camp. According to Expedia it would be $55 per night. Looks comparable to a Days Inn. The web-site says that it is 9 miles from Pepperdine. Close to the 101 Fwy.

When USD is there for their series they are staying at the Holiday Inn Santa Monica Beach. Seems a little pricey to me, compared to the other places they are staying. Coach must have his reasons. At Cal Poly they are staying at the Holiday Inn Express.

FrankF -
One of the best kept secrets is the Peach Tree Inn in San Luis Obispo. Wink Many player parents stay there. It is just 1 mile from the Cal Poly campus. The rates are very reasonable for the area and include a good continental breakfast. The local trolley also stops here and is a convenient ride to the downtown area a few blocks away.
I don't think I'll be making the trip down for that mid-week game. I hope you enjoy your visit. Cool

Frank...

Sorry about that!...

The ironic thing is that was about the price we had expected when we checked it out but were surprised to find it much lower so jumped immediately....Guess $72 was a better deal than we thought!!!

Maybe the deciding factor was that we are not Dartmouth Graduates!

Don't know anything about the Botanical Gardens. I would just enjoy the California Coast. If there is a hiking trail and the weather holds up, sounds awesome. A little ways north is Cambria a neat town to browse around, maybe have dinner. A little further is Hearst Castle. There are also a lot of wineries in the area.
