Gotta ask....This should stir up some Cali Forum debate/opinions....Saw this week that the CSU system is banning alchohol at all sporting events. Now I may be very mistaken....but is beer sold at some CSU games?...Chico? Fresno? LBSU? Fullerton? While I understand that no one goes to the games for the beer..it might be consdidered to be part of the experience for some, will this affect baseball attendance?

From what I've read on the Long Beach Forum, the fans are wondering if they will be affected as the Dirtbags play at a stadium run by the city and not on campus. While the posters have not said if this will deter them from attending the baseball games, it certainly appears as though it might affect the basketball attendance.

The Fullerton fans seem to be disappointed at the decision but they are determined to support their team regardless. The Titan fans tailgate before every game so perhaps they will be having their libations pre-game?

I'm not a beer or wine drinker so this doesn't affect me at all. Wink

While I understand the sentiment...and the problem having graduated from a CSU and seen abuse firsthand...it did seem like a drastic step IMO, particularly as I was not aware of any problems in those sports venues...

Having attended a UC school where alcohol was not a factor at any athletic venue, and having a son attend the same institution without alcohol at games, I am a strong proponent that alcohol NOT be made available at state supported facilities. I believe it DOES send the wrong message to the student-athletes, but my opinion on underage alcohol consumption has been stated clearly (and put down clearly) in other fora so this opinion shouldn't surprise anybody.

People, including my own husband, have tried to convince me that beer sales, or the lack thereof, can definitely impact the fan turn-out at the games However, it is my contention that the SUCCESS of the team is what draws fans, not the beer. In Riverside, years ago, there was a minor league team that played at the same sports complex which is now jointly handled by the city and the school. The team franchise left the sports complex and actually moved to Adelanto (high desert) because the city would not allow beer sales at the complex. I have heard different reasoning as to why UCR did not have beer sales ... I have heard it was because of the city and I have heard that it is because of UCR. I don't know which is truth, but when I attended UCR, I was told that there was some law on the books that forbad alcohol sales (including closed containers at liquor stores) within a mile of a UC campas. So I think no alcohol sales at UC's have history tho I don't know what the current situation is with the other UC's. I believe Cal has a wine garden of some sort at their baseball games ... perhaps URKMB can clarify that ... and I know that UCSB does not have beer (heck, they are lucky if they have ANY beverages with their almost non-existent "snack bar").

Anyway ... I think it is a good ruling, but then, I also believe that I am in the vast minority. angel

Ummmmm..... well, it's been awhile, but I do believe there was a beer/wine garden at the UC Berkeley weekend home games last year. It is a confined space located next to the visiting team's bullpen, and there is no alcohol permitted in the stands. I think the 1 mile rule you are talking about might be referring to that other school in the Bay Area -- perhaps 123KMom or justbaseball can shed some light on that penguinskateb

FBM..

While I completely understand the idea behind the action...and support some sort of sanity on college campuses...

I can also (as I am sure you probably can)seperate the stuff that goes on in the "student ghettos" and that in the sports venues. I went to a CSU that was nationally recognized for its party reputation - and IMO it earned every bit of that sordid reputation - and the sport venues never even entered into it as far as I saw.

While no big alchohol consumer...I like to watch the ballgames, not the Buzz..I would have to assume it would have some affect the ability of the program to draw alumni, local non-student fans, ticket sales and in the end donations.
