Our school has had a Feb 1 start for many years - but when I talk to parents from other leagues, many of them start earlier. Who sets the start date? And why doesn't each section have a universal date - or broader still why doesn't CIF have a start date?

They start conditioning after Holiday break, And then start actual Practice with the gloves and batting on Feb. 1. At least that's how I understood it. EH

Everything changed this year, at least in the Sac-Joaquin section. Players were allowed to work out with equipment up till mid-January, then it was a quiet time until around February 6th or so. Full workouts either just began or are about to begin at this time in the SJS.

It is done differently up here in Northern CA. How do you southern CA guys get clearance for that? we have fall HS baseball up there, but it shuts down in late October or early November for most schools, and not much else except conditioning until January.

In the Southern Section official baseball start date is Feb. 12. Games start Mar. 2, or at least the tournament we are in does. During the school year before Feb. 12, baseball is a PE class in which kids can throw, field and hit, only during the time confines of a normal PE class. They also play in fall leagues, where a coach, not officially affiliated with the team is leading. Our school plays almost every Sat. from Oct to Jan.
Now a lot of schools stretch the rules and practice longer, at other locations, have indiviaul workouts with coaches, etc. Not within the rules, but I have never heard of an enforcement of the rules.
San Diego Section: Spring sports start on Feb 17 (i.e., tryouts began today). First possible scrimmage: Feb. 27 First possible game: Feb. 28 Last possible regular season game: May 17
In addition, there is a cap on the number of "contests". There is a point systems where games count 1 point & tournaments (max 5 games) count 2 points. No school may exceed 20 points for a regular season.
Playoffs start May 22 and run through June 2 finals at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
