DB2BMom can speak to Long Beach State but as far as San Diego State University ... it is one of several California State Universities that are considered 'impacted'. Being designated an impacted campus significantly decreases the possibility for freshmen from outside a defined area to be accepted and enrolled, no matter their academic standing. I don't remember if Long Beach is classified as impacted or not.
Of course, if you were recruited by the baseball program at an impacted campus, your chances might be better. However, I would carefully look at the rosters of these two schools (presuming you are interested in playing baseball there) to see how many out of state players they carry ... 6 out of state players at LBSU this year (the rest of the roster seems almost equally divided between players from Northern Cal and players from Southern Cal. San Diego State may have some added ability to attract out of state players (with Tony Gwynn at the helm) but they only have 7 out of state players with most of the remaining players being from Southern Cal, San Diego area in particular.
There are quite a few quality JUCO's in So Cal that offer good education and superb baseball. Just to name some of the ones I am most familiar with (all part of the Orange Empire Conference): Cypress College, Saddleback, Santa Ana, Orange Coast ... those 4 stand out in my mind the most. I am not familiar with JUCO's in San Diego County ... perhaps someone else knows.
Good luck ... and it is never too soon to start looking at schools.
