JMU for several years was one of the diamonds of college baseball in the Mid-Atlantic.. Like most programs it has gone thru some slow periods but has been siging some top rated players..

Nice field, great school, beautiful location.. JMU is not an easy school to get into as it is in great demand, especially for in-state students..

JustMom,

I agree JMU is a very good school with a very good baseball program, but their field is awful! It has an astroturff infield that extends back into the outfield. Rightfield is significantly higher than home plate. It is really a shame because the rest of the school is beautiful.

Nice school, good coaching staff, academics are great, and field is not that bad. The head coach Spanky McFarland has several books out about pitching i'm pretty sure. He knows his stuff to the best of my knowledge. lets put it this way if i could go back a few years i would definately take there offer .... Frown

VaDad,

You are right. Their field is a goat track.

They have a good coaching staff, though. Their are more females at JMU than males, I think. Always a plus. Big Grin

JMU is a great program. Spanky has prepared a lot of kids for the pros . The astroturf field is not all bad considering that snow is still on the ground when their season starts. It is much easier to push on turf than grass.

Echoing the others, McFarland is very well regarded as a pitching coach, and the program traditionally is pretty solid.

I vote with the guys that don't like the astroturf infield with the grass outfield. I'd take the turf money and put in drains and heating coils under the infield, but they didn't ask me. Smile

Since the question came from a New Yorker, we should also add the school is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley; more like upstate New York and definitely not NYC. (a good thing in these parts)

My wife gets lots of alumni mail........
