very good baseball program, nice facilities. Play in very competitive West Coast Conference (Pepperdine, Loyola, USF...). NOt a particularly tough school academically. Beautiful location overlooking Mission Bay in San Diego.

Coach is a fairly young guy, but w/ an "old school" discipline approach.

It's a Jesuit run school if a religious component if of interest to you (all the schools in the West Coast Conference have a religious affiliation).

Let me add one more thing to what HeyBatter provided. The school is very expensive, nearly $50,000 a year with all the bells and whistles.

Actually, USD is a very good school academically. It is listed in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, it is a Catholic University, but it is not run by the Jesuits.

Looking at their admissions profile they do have fairly high gpa students with 57% of freshmen having a 3.75 or higher gpa in HS. The SAT scores of the accepted students are on the high side but not quite up with the gpa's.

My niece was there for one year. As noted by others it is good academically and expensive around $50K per year. It is in a beautiful location on the hill in San Diego. Don't know much about the baseball program. It has a high ratio of women to men students and was rated to have "the best looking women" of all Universities. Eek

Are you sure that wasn't SDSU not USD. When I was younger I remember SDSU be ranked high in partying and best looking women every year. Another SDSU ranking: One year they had the lowest cummulative gpa in the country.

At the risk of stating the obvious:

1. Private schools are expensive, period. Most range between $40-50k per year all in.
2. Academic excellence is relative. In order to determine whether a college or university has the kind of academics that suit you/your kid, compare it to those schools you consider/know to have academic rigor and those you do not.

And then:
3. USD has a very good baseball program - up and coming, ranked last year, made it to the big show, and is expected to do so again this year.

PS you can make your acadmic comparisons any number of ways. Check the Princeton Review Site - it will give you a plethora of information on all schools. Or, invest in a college ranking book like Fiske Guid to Colleges.

Great Program!

Good all around coach!

Play in San Diego and are nationally respected.

Fish tacos and great weather, what more can you ask for?
