One of the plusses of my sons selection was the academic support he got--yes he had mandatory study halls and if they missed they were not allowed to suit up for practice the next day.
Needless to say he never missed
I like it--it gave him purpose and direction and he graduated with a better GPA than he had in HS.
I think parents should know about such programs and whether or not the schools that their son is looking at have them.

Our son's school does mot require this. If a player is "on the bubble" a bit, then they have something for them. But normally the coaches have found that it hasn't been a problem.
Personally, I think it is a good idea ... especially for freshmen who are just getting used to the whole college-studies thing. Since AJ has been at UCR, there have only been 3 cases of ineligibility ... 1 last year and 2 this year ... all at the start of the season. All 3 players were able to recoup by the middle of the baseball season, tho, because UCR is on the quarter system and the spring quarter starts in the middle of baseball.

The JUCO my son attended had them, though not mandatory second semester if your GPA was high enough. Coach of school he signed with for next year said they have them for freshmen and transfers.
Way back when, I didn't have them. But, especially if they are staffed with tutors/mentors, I think they are a good idea.
Mandatory study hall every weekday during the fall season, if anyone on the team misses it, the entire team runs. Son said it only happened once and that was enough for all to know coach was serious.. No studyhall in season, but grades and attendence are constantly reviewed.

I like the idea, too. Figure you should take care of the kid's who may need the extra push... The kids who are disciplined would have been studying anyway.

I agree, I think mandatory study hall is a great program that some college programs require. My son's school had mandatory study hall for the freshmen only. You had to achieve and maintain a certain GPA after freshman year to be exempt from it (I think a 3.0?). My son never complained about it...it was the perfect time to get work done for him.

Chill, They have one sememster to prove themselves then released from daily study hall. If not, it continues until they maintain the GPA that is required of them. Even though my son is a good student, I feel that study hall will help him to learn how to manage his life in a new situation. Here you have kids living on their own for the first time, hectic schedule and tempted by the college social life, they really need to learn that disipline from the beginning. I also like that the coaches get weekly reports from the kids themselves. Many schools have a once a week mandatory class where they learn about time management, the responsibility of being a student athelete, social skills, etc.

At my son's school, there is mandatory study hall all year for anyone with less than a 2.5 GPA, and for all freshmen. My son had mixed feelings; he didn't mind the time for studying but said guys will talk, make noise, etc. and he felt he studied better on his own, away from the pack so to speak.

Also mandatory study hall first year and then depending on your grade average thereafter..when he transfered same policy and as a transfer would have had to do it allover again but his GPA was high enough to exempt him
Definately a good thing especially for freshman so they can learn how to handle it all
