Anyone know more details about this D2 power??

I was hoping to get more details on the school and the baseball program, facilities, ballpark, etc. thanks

Samll private school (less than 2,000 students) mostly Florida kids, but a significant % from out of State. Nice campus with many buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Solid academic reputation.

Nice weight training and locker room facilities on campus. Unfortunately ballpark is located off campus a few miles away. The ballpark itself is a nice facility, it was the former spring training site of the Detroit Tigers many, many years ago. Google "Henley Field" and you will be able to find history and photos.

The baseball program is as you noted a power. They have won 9 national titles in their history, most recently in 2005. Their league the Sunshine State Conference has produced 4 of the last 5 Div II National Champs. They consistenly have players drafted including 3 this past year, one in the 3rd round. this past year they were ranked as high as # 1 nationally, finished 2nd in their league, advanced to the finals of the regional tournament where they were knocked out by the 4th place team in their league (and eventual National Champ) Lynn University.

They are fully funded at 9 scholarships and academic money is also achievable for many.

Just to add to rw6 who is spot on. This will be coach Tyrrell's second season although he was promoted from within. I also believe there is a prerequisite that you must live in residence all 4 years. We came very close to going there but my son chose elsewhere.

There is no requirement to live in residence all 4 years. I know many of the players live off campus. However some of the academic award money is allocated for residence hall vs. tuition so if you choose to live off campus you may forfeit that portion of academic award. In other words they use academic award money in an attempt to keep you on campus.

I don't know the specifics of Florida Southern. But check the roster. I know of a rival, two time D2 national champion where most of the players getting on the field were transferred former D1's. With the new transfer rules this will be more prevalent at D2 powers.

I know two D1 transfers this summer who are going to D2's, one to Florida Southern. I expect both to play. The changes in rosters and transfer rules trickle talent downhill, as I expected.

Actually after further review I stand corrected, the residency rule does exist, however there are obviously exceptions as i am certain many of the players live off campus.

Good advice on checking transfer history, but I don't really think the new rules change the dynamics for the DII powers, they have always been the beneficiary of D1 transfers.

In 08/09 Florida Southern had three D1 transfers. One played a bunch and was a big contributor, one played some but struggled most of the year, one rarely got off the bench.

The lesson in my view, you should be aware of D1 transfers but if you fear competing with them the DII powers may not be the place for you either.

Even before the new rules FS could play with a good percentage of Division I programs in the country

Any program whether D2's bringing in a lot of transfer D1's or D1's bringing in a lot of JuCo players, is probably not the best place for a freshman.

i am very familiar with the program and coaches at Fla. Southern. the staff is GREAT. Very respectful of their players---this cannot be said of every college baseball coaching staff. they draw ALOT of scouts. They have a history of many players being drafted from their program. i cannot say enough good things about this program. i definetly suggest you check it out.
