Any opinions on St Mary's would be appreciated, both academics and baseball.

Thanks

Beautiful campus, very (and I do mean very) small and quiet, good/excellent academics, baseball ... struggling this year tho they have a new coach this year, so things may change when the coaching staff gets established.

I agree w/H-Mom (not unusual). In addition, they have recently gone through some painful budget cuts, including the elimination of their football program beginning next year. While that was a tough decision for them that has had many repercussions in the community, from a baseball-centric perspective, it is good news because it means more focus and $$$ heads to the program. This is from a member of the board of directors, who I happened to talk with last week.

I guarentee Jed Soto will rebuild the St. Mary's program. He is an outstanding coach-
scout. St. Mary's is an excellent academic
school.

Thank you all for the input. I knew the academics were top notch, but the baseball appears to be pretty weak. They are recruiting my son (pitcher) for next year. He is a Juco sophmore now. Coaches say they want a fast turnaround.

A little perspective: The prior coaches went in with the same attitude of turning around an unsuccessful program. In my opinion, St Mary's is a school you have to visit. It is a fit for some because it is very beautiful but very, very isolated and quiet. Little if any off campus activity. Also quite expensive. They have a very long way to go to compete not only in the WCC but also in the recruiting battles. UC Davis is now going DI and Pacific, Santa Clara and USF are upgrading their programs which will add to the competition for players.

infielddad - yes, it's isolated, but remember, it's 20 minutes away from Berkeley and 30 - 40 minutes away from San Francisco. Best of both worlds, I'd say.
