Usually when I take my son out to a field for a work out, we throw, long toss, work on pitching, work on grounders and do some BP. Does it matter if he does the long toss or the pitching first? We don't necessarily have a set routine but it seems like we tend to do the long toss before the pitching.

Long toss before pitching sounds good. At a Red Sox game not long ago, that is exactly what Josh Beckett did for his pre-game. Prior to going into the bullpen to pitch his warm up, he did long toss in the outfield, started fairly short distance then went long, then longer, moved it back in for a few then went to the bullpen and started pitching at maybe 75% and worked up to game speed from there.

My son and I do something like that when he throws a bullpen, although we usually do a long toss and pitch bullpen on one day and don't do any fielding that day, if anything he might hit some afterwards. Then on a fielding day we'll do long toss to warm up, do the fielding, and if we have time do some Batting practice. Usually don't field and throw after pitching a bullpen. I'm not sure that there's anything wrond with that, we just haven't done that much. Maybe because it mentally separates the two types of throwing mechanics, pitching and infield. More of a mental thing, although after a good bullpen it isn't a bad thing to lay off the throwing. Depends on the amount and intensity of the bullpen.

dad10 - thanks. Usually when we do the fielding, we don't have anybody to throw to so it's more mechanics than throwing.

Right Beezer, that makes sense. Toss the balls to the side and work on the fielding. We don't often have another person to throw to either. When we do first base defense we usually do that toss the ball aside thing anyway, but when we do outfield he practices fielding it and sometimes making the throw to the cutoff guy, which means I hit the ball, grab my glove, and run out to a 1B cut-off position. It's a good workout for me. Some people might call it insane, but it keeps me in shape. I have a great time working on baseball with my son, I get as much out of it as he does. It's great isn't it?

It's fun but it can make for a grueling couple of hours! When we do the OF stuff, he tends to work on throws to home versus the cut-off (again, nobody there) for building arm strength.
