My son attended the NC STATE pitching camp just before Christmas and we would like to say it was well run and got a lot of good info...fyi...just in case anyone is thinking of attending one at NC STATE.

Hey Lefty can you give any details? How old is your son? What did they do ect? My son (soon to be 16) has been to Duke, UNC and to the Doyles in Florida. We looked at the State camp especailly since I went to college there. But didn't go. Other then the Doyle camp in florida my son said UNC was excellent and he would go back. Thanks

The pitching coach had a wealth of knowledge his name is Chris Roberts he's also left handed which helped in my son'situation.He told everyone what they needed as far as pitches to go to the next level.What he looked for in a pitcher for mental toughness,showed pickoff moves...to know your on pitches and the batters weakness,how to challenge batters..and most of all he kept my sons attention from 8:00 am till 4:00pm.and my son said he enjoyed it....Normally he says he bored at the other few camps we have gone to.There were 2 kids from Fla.there and 1 from Penn....Don't know if all the camps at State are this good but we'll go back....

The staff at NC State has excellent camps, the coaches are knowlegable and they do a great job!!

LEFTY? Do you have to call there to get enrolled in a camp? I see they have another pitching camp only scheduled for Jan. 24th and 25th. I cannot find any other info then what is on go.pack.com. Thanks!

My son played for Coach Avent at New Mexico State and I can tell you--you cant be with a better baseball guy

LeftyFord, I just wanted to say thanks for the info on the camp. We attended the camp this past Saturday for Pitchers only and it was great! My son really enjoyed it and it was a success for him because he actually picked up some good infromation on drills ect. I was impressed with the pitching coach, Coach Roberts and how well he related to the campers. Also I was REALLY impressed with the structure of the camp and also how acessible the whole coaching staff was to the campers and there parents. Including head Coach Avent! They broke all the boys into small groups of no more then four and had stations going all the time for all campers. Everyone was busy all day. It was capped off by the boys getting to throw for the radar gun and get there speeds. Good information. Also there were boys from all over country. We will be attending this camp again in the future I hope!!
Like you my son will be sixteen in February and this camp was a very good measuring stick for him against other's in high school. There were a few small kids but most were highschool aged young men. i would highly recommend this camp for pitchers.

Carolina's summer camp for 05 and 06 grads.
I hope we are not disappointed because its not cheap by my standards.....

Lefty, My son attended the Carolina camp last summer. Actually he attended the pitcher's/catcher's camp first and then went back for the "Super Skills" week long camp. In my son's opinion (and mine also) the pitching camp at NC State was better run. But my son DOES want to go back to UNC's super skills camp which I thought was very good. And Coach Fox of UNC impressed me very much as a person and the way he inspires and talks to the kids about "LIFE". The boys actually get to play games and they can measure themselves against other boys there age from across the country. Let me know for sure if you sign up because we plan on being there. Also we are taking a serious look at Duke's camp for skills and playing games also. I understand there camp has sold out the last two summers. Just some info. Have a good one!

Clemson has the best camp. My son went to the super skills camp at Carolina and learned very little-just played games. Clemson is much better according to my son. I am a UNC grad-haha!

The one we are thinking about is the Super Skills Camp.The part that gets our interest is the evaluation of campers as prospective Division 1 student-athletes...It would be great to get that kind of feedback.(or not)

I'll agree with two things that have been said:
Coach Fox is a great teacher, coach and individual.
You'll primarily play games at the Super Skills camp (unless they have changed format from a couple years ago). As with most of the camps for high school age kids, it is as much about the coaches evaluating the player as teaching or improving skills.

If UNC is high on your list of schools you want to attend, you ought to go. If your goal is feedback on D1/D2/D3, I would highly recommend Best in Virginia. They have many coaches from programs at all levels and there is a nice combination of showcase and instruction. Our son ('04) went last summer and got letters of interest from about 10 D1 and D3 schools. That gave us feedback that he was definitely D3, potentially mid-major D1, and likely not major D1 (he eventually signed with a mid-major D1 not as a result of BIV, but from having been seen at that school's camp). He said BIV was the best camp he had ever been to.

jda, thanks for the input. I think the format is still the same from before form what I saw last year and from what I heard from other kids who has been before. I still am impressed by Coach Fox. Hard for me to say from a wolfpacker alumni!!LOL! He has a great program going there.
As for the Best in Virginia camp where can I find info for this. My son is 16, sophomore at Person high school. Did your son play for Chapel Hill? If so we are in the same conference. I will say again NC States pitching camp this past January was one of the best we have attended just for pitching. Look forward to your comments. I use to live in Carrboro. Glad to be back in the country!!

Since you are from NC, another nice aspect about this camp is that you get exposed to coaches from Virginia/Pennsylvania/Maryland and other points north - which is a different group than you will see in the Greater Raleigh Fall League or at the Impact Showcase.

Our son is at East Chapel Hill - so we won't be in the same conference as Person for a couple years.

I saw in the durham paper last week that east chapel hill will come into our conference in 2005. So amybe we will see you as early as nexy year. Thanks again for the info.

The GRFBL has several different levels. Our son played in "major" the last two years. There are about 5 teams from around the triangle and they have tryouts in the late summer. The coaches also watch spring high school games and Legion games to select players. They play about 6 weekends and schedule several showcase weekends where they bring in teams from other areas and get a fair number of college coaches out to watch those games. www.nwcba.com is their website. I think if you are putting a whole team in it is probably the "AAA" league.
