I suggest a HSBBW (and TBR) get-together at Tyler's in the American Tobacco building across from the DBAP. Time and date to be announced later. Come one, come all.

Who all will be there?

Anybody really wonder how long the ACC Commissioner was going to scramble for a location? It was even money a location in NC would be found.

It's also pretty good odds eight ACC colleges will be in Durham, in late May 2009.

However, it's less odds that five ACC colleges will earn berths in the NCAA Baseball Tournament!

Of the 12 colleges in the Conference, the four colleges having a high probability NOT to be in Durham in 2009 include:
Maryland
Boston College
Virginia Tech
Duke

For 2010, the four colleges that have a higher probability NOT to be at Fenway in 2010 include:
Wake Forest
Boston College
Virginia Tech
Duke

Has anyone seen the 2009 or 2010 ACC schedule?
Since all twelve ACC teams do not play each other, it's somewhat significant to understand who does not play each other in 2009 and 2010.

cheers
Bear

Poor old Bear, always trying to punch buttons and pick a fight.

(For those who did not notice, Bear has Maryland surpassing Wake Forest in 2010.)

Dream on, buddy!

See you at the field.

I really have no desire to pick on Maryland. In particular I know and respect Coach Farr, and three of their current freshmen are former teammates and friends.

But to rely on a more disinterested source than myself, here are the national rankings, as posted by Perfect Game/PGCrosschecker.com last spring, of the 2008 recruiting classes of the 12 ACC schools:

3. UNC
10. Clemson
11. UVA
16. Wake Forest
17. Miami
18. Florida State
19. N.C. State
30. Ga. Tech
42. Duke
66. Maryland
69. Boston College
71. Va. Tech

UNC is still well stocked, but having lost 6 incoming freshman to the MLB draft, when these rankings are updated soon the Tar Heels will probably not hold onto that # 3 spot. I wouldn't expect them to tumble too much, because if you look at their remaining recruits it's still an impressive bunch, but # 3 would be a tough notch to cling to.

Clemson lost its top recruit to the draft. UVA lost one recruit to the draft and another one will most likely redshirt this year due to shoulder surgery. Wake lost ... nobody. Everyone is in class today.

What this means is, there is a chance that Wake's current freshman class will end up rated as the ACC's best this year. And even if they don't quite corral that honor, it's a tough sell to suggest that this group is on its way to the bottom of the conference standings in coming years. Especially since I understand Wake's 2009 class is coming along quite nicely, too!

Nicely done, Midlo.

(See, I told you so. See #2 above.)

Now, the hard part. Wake Forest needs to live up to the expectations. From what I hear, things are going very well this fall.

Don't be misled. I'm not getting much in the way of details. But he says things are going well and he's master of the understatement so I take that as a very positive sign!

Wakes 08 class may very well be the best in the ACC. They are going to be very good imo. I expect to see them in Durham.

There are areas you are closer.

Where's the 2009 & 2010 ACC schedules?

Bottom Line: Good luck to each of your sons.
I look forward to your freshman son's weekend contributions and success in the ACC, next winter and spring.

GRRRRRR! The Bear has growled. This thread took a rude turn, didn't it?

After the football game today you should be in a better mood. Congrats to the Terps on their victory today against a ranked California team - maybe this will be Maryland's year on the gridiron! (Now be nice, that was a compliment.) ACC Football needs all the W's they can get.

Am I "the Mom (with a Freshman)" that you refer to in your recent post? You may call me Buzz, or Cathy if you prefer, and no, I'm not nervous when son is on the bump, behind the plate, at the plate or in the outfield - I know he'll give it his all and that's enough for me. (Ok, ok, I'll admit to a few butterflies.)

Oh, and yes, as a matter of fact I have attended numerous ACC Tournaments. Most recently I watched 55 innings in less than 45 hours at the 2008 ACC Tourney in Jax. Always great fun to return to Jacksonville where I lived for many years and where 3 of my sons were born.

Not sure what my nervousness or experience with ACC tournaments has to do with whether WFU or Maryland will be at Fenway in May 2010 or with the original theme of this thread, which was, "who will be at the ACC Tournament at the DBAP in May '09?" I think most of us took that to mean which HSBBW posters would be at the ACC tournament, not an invitation to debate which teams would be there. Will you be there? If so, I'd be glad to buy you a Coke and hear all about Maryland baseball (which admittedly I know very little about - didn't get to see them in '05 when they last played in the tournament), because I'll be there regardless of which teams make the cut. Always up for talking baseball. But you mustn't be snide or condescending or I'll insist that you pick up the tab for the Cokes.

Ultimately, I don't think anything said here will have much effect one way or the other on who will be in Boston in 2010. I certainly wish nothing but the best to the Maryland team this coming season - except when they meet WF. WF barely squeaked by with 2 wins at Maryland last season.

As far as meaninglessness of preseason predictions:

Were you referring to PG's, or your own?

I'd comment on the rest of it, if only I could decipher any of it.

Bear, being his charming self, met his match in Baseball Buzz.

Nicely done, Cathy! Meet boorishness with class. I look forward to meeting you at the '10 ACC tournament in Fenway, where Duke WILL be!

Thanks, Rob. I look forward to meeting you as well, and I have no doubt Coach McNally will bring the Blue Devils back to the ACC Tournament in the near future. He is a class act as a coach, and he and his staff are doing a great job recruiting. As a Duke alum, I look forward to seeing the Blue Devil's program succeed. Of course, my first allegiance is now to the Deacs!

Let's not be too hard on Bear - he just tends to be a bit cantankerous. I'm sure he's seen a lot in his day, and if we all sat down over a burger we would really enjoy hearing his stories.

I too hope we have an opportunity to meet at Fenway in 2010. Until then, congratulations and best of luck to your son at Duke. Lots of posters on here from central NC (like me) that will be keeping an eye on him for you.
